Step outside of the design box

I’m always on the lookout for cool new décor finds and unique ways to display or create pieces. My absolute favorite playground for these is Las Vegas Market.

I snapped some photos to share unique inspirations that caught my attention. The puzzle tables are funky and whimsical, but functional at the same time. You can arrange them to suit your needs. But of course, the real reason I love them is because of how cool they look.

What’s the takeaway here? Not to get the exact same tables. It’s the idea of arranging objects into a unique tabletop. Try mixing different table heights, different finishes, a circle and a square, layered tones of white, or silver and gold. Create a unique piece — it’s a great conversation starter when you’re entertaining.

The other photo is from a showroom that specializes in smaller items like vases, planters and things. But it’s the shelving that I found fascinating. Ultra sleek, white floating shelves are juxtaposed with a gnarly root stem. The root “cuts” through the shelves so that it looks like it’s growing through the piece.

As if that doesn’t provide enough visual interest, the elements are asymmetrical. The offset root grounds the shelves, ties them together and provides a quirky balance.

What’s the takeaway here? You’re probably not going to do exactly this in your own home (although I’m tempted!). It’s more so the idea of juxtaposing elements. Maybe it’s not a different material, but a different color — a darker shelf that vertically ties together lighter horizontal shelves. Maybe it’s stacks of books arranged in a vertical line that also “cuts” through the shelves. These options would have the same effect of grounding and adding interest to asymmetrical shelving.

Inspiration is everywhere. Look for ways to tweak it to suit you — and find the courage to create your own unique look.
