Design elements that say ‘wow’

It’s time to wrap up our series on the luxurious bedroom retreat in Kahala. I started with a blank canvas and a favorite painting of the homeowners that became my inspiration piece.

I showed you how to layer textures, patterns and colors. And I promised that today I’d share with you the wow that brings the room together. You know how much I love wow!

To me, a wow could be a big, bold statement, a focal point that’s whimsical, even a creative and unusual texture. Or, as in this bedroom, it could be the unexpected way you utilize any of these aforementioned elements. Knowing that the wife (client) loves glass, when I saw these glass and metal mushrooms, I knew they needed to go in this space.

Hand-blown glass wall art isn’t necessarily all that special on its own. Sometimes, the difference is in how you look at things. I looked at the hall leading into the bedroom, turned my head sideways and got the idea for a treatment spanning both walls. So, we layered and mixed the mushrooms, clustering them in different sizes and heights into an organic pattern that transitions from one wall to the next. I left the hallway wall in its original cream color, creating more visual interest in the contrast with the bedroom’s taupe walls. The combination creates a wow factor that becomes a unique focal point, and enhances the space without taking over.

Keep in mind that you don’t need expensive pieces to create your own wow factor.

You can use ordinary objects — including wall clings and box frames — but arrange them in an interesting way. Look for different sizes, heights and patterns. Anything can become wow — it all depends on the way you see it. So, turn your head and see what you can come up with!
