From Clutter to Calm

Do you have one of those rooms that’s become a nightmare space? You know, a clutter closet?

During a recent decorating job at a five-bedroom house, when my client told me they were now ready to turn their nightmare space into one where the kids could print out homework and watch TV, and where guests might stay, I knew exactly what to do.

I decided to turn this room into a calming space. It doesn’t take much to do this. Here are a few easy tips for you:

Keep colors minimal

I chose a paint color that would bring the stress level down — a dark, rich taupe that would be highlighted by the existing white trim. Pops of white in the desk chair and floating shelves tie in with the white trim.

Keep it simple

The more open space the eye sees, the more relaxed the mind becomes. I brought in minimal furniture with clean lines and hung modern art that ties in with the coffee table and accent pillows, so the room feels put together.

Maximize space

Think opposite of clutter. Look for things that can serve multiple purposes and opportunities for built-in furniture. Here, the sofa converts to a full bed, and a small built-in desk takes up minimal space.

So, this former clutter closet is now a place of relaxation, thanks to a quick, affordable update that’s made it one of the family’s favorite places to relax.

Try this, and one of your home’s nightmares could turn into a dream spot!
